IT hiring is on the rise across sectors, according to research firm Computer Economics. Of the 200 midsize to large U.S. and Canadian employers it polled, 52 percent said they plan to increase IT staff, the first time since 2007 that more than half of IT organizations said they’ll increase headcount. IT staff are among the most difficult jobs for employers to fill, according to the ninth annual Talent Shortage Survey by ManpowerGroup. Some 47 percent of the employers surveyed said those hiring difficulties stemmed from candidates’ lack of technical competencies; a shortage of “soft skills” also topped the list. If research firm IDC is correct, 2014 could become the year of the “phablet.” IDC defines phablets as smartphones with screens exceeding 5.5 inches, a category that encompasses a growing number of devices.
