Employers Having a Hard Time Hiring IT Staff

IT staff are among the most difficult jobs for employers to fill, according to the ninth annual Talent Shortage Survey by ManpowerGroup. Some 47 percent of the employers surveyed said those hiring difficulties stemmed from candidates’ lack of technical competencies; a shortage of “soft skills” also topped the list. Is 2014 the Year of the Phablet?

If research firm IDC is correct, 2014 could become the year of the “phablet.” IDC defines phablets as smartphones with screens exceeding 5.5 inches, a category that encompasses a growing number of devices. Samsung in particular has led the phablet charge, seeing it as a competitive differentiator from Apple, which has (so far) resolved to keep the iPhone’s screen at no more than four inches diagonal. Facebook may have missed out on buying Snapchat, but that hasn’t cooled the company’s ardor for disappearing-messages apps—or the audiences that come with them: The Financial Times reports that Facebook’s engineers are hard at work on an “ephemeral messaging” platform that would vaporize videos and photos after a single view. Women Still Losing Ground in Computer-Science Careers

When President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, women working full time earned an average of 59 cents for every dollar made by a man in a similar job.
