“Looking for a piece of hay in a hay stack.”
A few years ago, if you heard the term “cloud computing” you may have thought of Amazon if you thought of anything at all. Microsoft soon came along and coined the phrase, “to the cloud.” By that time, as an IT Professional, you started doing what you do best: googling. You searched for everything you could find on cloud computing and found very little or not enough to revive that thirst for knowledge you once had — it was like finding a needle in a hay stack.
As you may have guessed, if you google cloud computing today, you will most likely see more information than you ever dreamed about. As a matter of fact, you may be looking for a piece of hay in a hay stack.
I recently read that cloud computing is no longer thought of as a platform but as a strategy by CIOs.
Depending on your perspective, cloud computing can be both. If you’re thinking of the big picture as CIO/CTO, and depending on your industry, you may be thinking that you can reduce cost, improve productivity and deliver a more scaled approach to your customers — thus a strategy. If you’re tasked with coding, architecting or managing a team, you may have to think about talent (current skills, needed skills, buy-in), migration, security, maintenance and cost — thus a platform. And, depending on your industry, these all may be rolled into one.
So, “to the cloud.” How do you make sense of it all? It seems like every day a new cloud appears in the IT sky. Soon, it may be so cloudy that we begin experiencing digital rain, the fall out from too much hype and not enough substance. Where’s the silver lining (Sorry. I couldn’t resist.)? Well, it’s right in front of you.
We’re going to have fun breaking down the details of cloud computing and the many floating parts that seem to shift with the wind. We’ll talk about how-tos, what is and is not, emerging trends, true strategies and what it takes to build an exciting career. We’ll even show you how mobile fits into the cloud.
