Will Apple Really Hire 7,400 People By 2016?
Apple could hire as many as 7,400 more employees over the next three years if all goes according to plan. Between the ring-shaped Cupertino campus the company’s proposed as its new headquarters and other nearby facilities, Apple will have room to house those thousands, according to an economic study released by the company. The study says Apple will expand its headcount by nearly 50 percent between now and the complex’s 2016 completion date, which would boost its overall area workforce… continue…
Unemployed? Use Your Workforce Investment Board
If you’re looking for a tech job in Silicon Valley, and want to refresh your skills or learn completely new technologies, you might want to start with one of the local workforce boards operated through federal One-Stop Centers. Many job seekers assume these programs are limited to providing basic training in manual trades, but that’s actually pretty far from the case. Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs) help with job search tools through resume instruction and makeovers, interview practice and help with… continue…

Entrepreneurs Band Together to Launch Multiple Startups
The idea of one entrepreneurial company having its hand in a number of startups at once is making a comeback. The approach, which gained traction during the Internet boom of the 90s, but deflated along with the bubble, is coming back into vogue, says the New York Times. Behind the movement are serial entrepreneurs who are banding together to invest in promising tech ideas rather than putting all of their eggs into one company’s basket, or taking the hands-off approach… continue…

Fatherhood Equality: Yahoo Policy Raises Questions
Following the backlash from its recent telecommuting ban, Yahoo has doubled its paid maternity leave for new mothers from eight to 16 weeks. But new fathers didn’t fare as well — they’ll continue to have only eight weeks’ leave under the new policy. Yahoo’s approach is just the latest example of fatherhood getting the short-shrift in family leave, which is echoed across a number of companies and industries. But in the technology industry, which is largely male, this discrepancy is… continue…
10 Reasons You Shouldn’t Work for a Startup
With their promise of potentially building something to rock the world, not to mention potential riches that could come from an IPO, startups hold a lot of sex appeal. But if you’re thinking that jumping into that kind of adventure is the next step in your career, be sure you’re thinking carefully. Some people are drawn to the idea of new companies the way moths are drawn to light — and they end up getting fried. To help you avoid… continue…

A 12-month moving average of unemployment rates between women and men in IT from the Economic Policy Institute shows the gender gap narrowing… continue…
Interview Questions for Developers Over 18
Working in the business side of adult entertainment isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but these companies are often among the leaders when it comes to aggressive use of technology and closely following best practices. It’s a dynamic that fascinates us: That’s why we wrote about the adult website Kink.com some months ago, and why we went back to its CTO, Steve Morgan, to find out how he goes about hiring developers for his tech team of about 25 people. For… continue…
How ‘Zombie’ Startups Can Bring Themselves Back to Life
These aren’t the best of times for consumer and e-commerce startups. After years of seemingly unbridled access to venture capital, many have seen funding slow to a trickle. For some, investors are wary of their slow growth. For others, investors are wary of pretty much everything, and so won’t put in any money at all. Either way, investors’ caution is threatening a number of these companies, “zombies,” in Silicon Valley parlance. It’s unclear how many of these startups are in… continue…
