Internet of Things Increases Need for Security Pros

The sheer number of “things” to be secured in the Internet of Things is expected to create a rash of jobs in cybersecurity over the next several years.

“You’re going to have to secure the device or the sensor, you need to secure the data, and you’re going to have to secure that across an open network,” Intel’s head of business marketing, Stuart Dommett, told an IoT roundtable in May. “It really is a massive, massive change.”

Intel has argued previously that the IoT, which is expected to see 26 billion connected devices by 2020, needs its own security model to protect user data.

This demand for security professionals will exacerbate an existing, ongoing shortage. Cisco’s 2014 Annual Security Report estimates that 1 million security professionals are needed to meet today’s demand in the global market.

A recent Rand Corp. report, which notes that training programs might not pay off for five years or more, says the most pressing demand is at the high end—experienced professionals who command salaries of $200,000 to $250,000. However, the report suggests the nation’s cybersecurity needs will be met as high salaries lure needed workers into the space.

I understand that the demand is for the higher tiered security professionals, but it almost seems as though there’s nothing for those just starting out and wanting to get into security (such as myself). Companies are seeking experienced and talented people, but how do you get the experience when no one wants to hire you because you don’t have experience…

Get an entry level certification from cisco or cisa. Then get a job as a Systems admin somewhere small. Check craigslist. You’ll do a lot of security work at a small company. Then along with getting experience there, get more advanced certs. Time:2-3 years.
