Of course it is! So is “cloud” and before that, “thin client”, among others It’s all a bunch of hooey by people who want to make money in IT without knowing anything about it. Especially that “analyst”. I bet s/he makes more than I do, and I’m doing it.
A typical desktop PC – not big iron, clusters, or anything that’s stamped “enterprise” – is faster than a supercomputer of 15 years ago. A handheld will be doing “big data” in 10 years, and we won’t even know it.

I worked at a bank which was enamored with self-service BI, and wanted to implement it just for the heck of it, although all they were doing was financial reporting, and not analytics–wrong-minded indeed.
Just attended an Oracle summit where they were pushing Big Data, interesting.
