Apple killed its Xserve server product line two years ago—and while an IT pro can configure a Mac Pro with OS X Server, that’s not really the same thing as a “real” server. In a few short years, I bet that Apple will be out of the server business completely—even as an opportunistic dabbler…

    As the last round of hardware refreshes has shown, Apple is able to generate high CPU performance in a relatively small package with their revamped Mini line up. Now that they have Thunderbolt in a chassis that small, they have a platform that lets them decouple processor and graphics upgrades in a flexible manner. This will open up all sorts of interesting design possibilities for the current Mac Pro’s replacement. There’s still a market for a powerful desktop machine, but that market appears to be shrinking fast.
