Lenovo’s New IdeaTab Tablet Packs a Punch

Lenovo’s new IdeaTab S2109 is an interesting piece of equipment. It has a 9.7 inch IPS display (1024 x 768), a 1.3 megapixel camera in the front, micro HDMI, micro USB, micro SD, four speakers with SRS Trumedia for stronger bass and 10 hours of battery life – while being just 8.9 mm thick (the newest iPad is 9.4 mm).

Would you buy one of these, or are you happy with what you’ve got? Tell us by posting a comment below.

The magic comes from a Texas Instruments OMAP processor (which one is not clear). At the time of this blog there was no word how much RAM Lenovo will put into the device.

The back has four speakers for SRS Trumedia sound, which Lenovo says provides better bass and overall sound quality compared to other tablets. Is good sound a selling point? Probably not, as Hewlett-Packard will attest after its Beats-branded TouchPad failed to gain traction. Yet if the rest of the package holds up, it’s a nice little bonus.

The S2109 falls short of the iPad in a couple of departments: The screen pales in comparison to the new iPad’s 2048 x 1536 retina display and there’s no camera in the back. Neither of these is a deal breaker. While the new iPad’s screen is quite lovely, it uses a lot of power. A 1024 x 768 screen actually looks very good on a tablet. As for the camera, most people have one on their cell phone anyway.

Lenovo will face some steep competition from other Android manufacturers and Apple, but if this IdeaPad is priced competitively, it could sell.
