Wikipedia Boycotts Godaddy Over SOPA

Godaddy blockedWikipedia recently transferred all their sites from GoDaddy due to ongoing contention over the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

Last December, GoDaddy couldn’t seem to make up its mind regarding the SOPA bill. At first, the company supported the SOPA bill and users began to drop GoDaddy as a web hosting company. GoDaddy support contacted many of these users in hopes to change their mind and accept discounts and apologies. This only went so far and GoDaddy announced that they dropped support for SOPA and that “Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it”.

A short time after this, Jimmy Wales from Wikipedia announced that they have “began actively seeking other domain management providers”. Right now, the entire portfolio of the Wikipedia Foundation is being hosted by MarkMonitor.

The Foundation’s legal team decided that MarkMonitor could best provide the comprehensive services that we needed. MarkMonitor is a U.S.-based registrar with an office in San Francisco and has substantial experience managing other high-traffic domains. The company will help the Foundation consolidate and centralize management of all of its domains, will provide services needed to manage a global domain portfolio and will better protect our domains with additional security features.

The Foundation was already utilizing MarkMonitor’s brand protection services and we found their dedicated customer support team’s work to be exceptional. The use of their domain management services ensures greater efficiency in the handling of the Foundation’s trademark and domain name portfolios.

We have been very impressed with MarkMonitor to this point and we are confident we have placed the Wikimedia domain portfolio in competent hands.

Wikipedia, the 5th most visited website in the world lead the SOPA protests earlier this year and went black with several websites to protest against SOPA bill. The protest echoed across the Internet and shortly after, SOPA was delayed until “issues are addressed”.
