Apple Co-Founder Woz Believes Android Bests iPhone?

Apple iPhone 4SApple CEO Steve Jobs vowed to destroy the Android operating system, but his Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak (or Woz), thinks that in many ways, Android has leaped ahead of Apple’s iOS operating system.

In a recent interview in the online publication The Daily Beast, Woz says that he’s a fan of Android-based smartphones.  He goes on to say that “he still thinks Apple’s iPhone is the best overall smartphone, but he says there are ways in which Android has leapt ahead of Apple.”

In the article, Woz points out a number of differences that show how Android smartphones best the iPhone and how Apple’s iPhone ecosystem could be part of the reason.   He goes on to comment of Apple’s close integration of Siri into the iPhone 4S:

“I used to ask Siri, ‘What are the five biggest lakes in California?’ and it would come back with the answer. Now it just misses. It gives me real estate listings. I used to ask, ‘What are the prime numbers greater than 87?’ and it would answer. Now instead of getting prime numbers, I get listings for prime rib, or prime real estate,” Woz says.

In the end, Woz still recommends the iPhone as the best choice for most users for its simplicity and elegance. “The people I recommend the iPhone 4S for are the ones who are already in the Mac world, because it’s so compatible, and people who are just scared of computers altogether and don’t want to use them. The iPhone is the least frightening thing. For that kind of person who is scared of complexity, well, here’s a phone that is simple to use and does what you need it to do,” he says.

Will his comments hurt the iPhone sales?  Not likely.  Woz is an engineer and one of the best Silicon Valley has ever produced.  His comments, if anything, should be a wakeup call to Apple iOS Engineering to look at some of these issues and differences and plan for their own leap ahead in technology.
