Hewlett-Packard will keep its PC division following a data-driven analysis that concluded it would be too costly to proceed with the spin-off proposed in August by ousted CEO Leo Apotheker.
HP’s new CEO, Meg Whitman, says that “HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees.”
She also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the tablet business, but instead of going all in with its own webOS as one would expect, HP will make tablets that run on Microsoft’s Windows 8. For the time being, the company still doesn’t know what to do with webOS, but a decision will be made in the next few months.
HP’s only consumer tablet, the webOS-powered TouchPad, was discontinued less than two months after it was launched on July 1. The remaining units were sold at the fire sale price of $99.
