Federal CIOs Will Hire Despite Lower Budgets

Although federal CIOs aren’t expecting a budget increase this year — or even next — more than a third — 36 percent — will increase staffing in IT program management, while 33 percent expect to hire in enterprise architecture and 29 percent for cybersecurity. Just 7 percent said headcount would fall.

Federal IT DashboardFew CIOs plan to emulate their private sector counterparts by laying off workers. They will, however, try to cope with budget cuts by stealing a few pages from Corporate America’s  playbook. Their top priorities include lowering operating expenses, integrating systems and processes, and implementing security and privacy measures followed by project management improvements.

Twenty-one percent expect to hire more contractors to handle cybersecurity, while 14 percent foresaw a reduction.
